I just returned from Bucharest, Romania, where I attended the annual gathering of the World Association of Detectives (WAD). Sounds mysterious, right?
WAD is a global alliance of investigators and security professionals who are dedicated to promoting and maintaining the highest ethical standards in the professions of private investigator and security service. Its origins date back to 1921, making it the longest established and largest association of its kind in the world. The organization has nearly 900 members in more than 70 countries, but there is a core group of about 100 people, including me.
At the gathering, there were discussions, a board meeting, a black-tie ball and other organized events. But one of the aspects I find most rewarding is the chance to meet and talk with other private investigators who are experts in their field – in other parts of the world.
Bearden Investigative Agency has worked in more than 40 countries, as well as every state in the nation, so these types of connections can be vital to our work. Actually, they aren’t connections; they are valued, trusted relationships with individuals who, like me, embrace the highest ethical standards and practices in their work.
I’ve known many WAD members for years, and I know I can call on them for advice, information and other help if I am working on a case in their country. It makes a difference to our work and to our clients, who value the fact that we are the only agency in Dallas with a strong network of contacts outside the state and country.
I know I can depend on WAD members. The organization only selects individuals whose personal and professional backgrounds and business affiliations adhere to the precepts of truth, accuracy and prudence. WAD also works to eliminate unreliable, incompetent and irresponsible members of the profession, and it seeks to foster a spirit of cooperation among its members and professionals conducting detailing investigations.
